Crohn's Disease

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract that may afflict any portion of the tract. Resection of the small bowel in the setting of Crohn’s disease is not a cure, it may reoccur at the site of surgical anastomosis, within a stoma, or within a previously unaffected area of small bowel. Recurrence is common and unpredictable, and factors influencing recurrence include: disease activity, indication for initial surgery, and number of prior surgical resections. With multiple resections, it may lead a patient to short bowel, nutritional deficiencies, and malnutrition, thus, resulting in the need for TPN dependency.

TPN dependency and resulting failure of TPN may then be an indication for intestinal transplant.
