Welcome to the
Patient and Caregiver Section!
Every patient and caregiver experiences a unique path when navigating the world of intestinal dysfunction. The Transplant Unwrapped patient and caregiver section provides educational and support resources for patients and their loved ones wherever they may be on their journey, from initial diagnosis of an intestinal condition to treatment with intestinal rehabilitation or transplantation.
Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS):
This is when the body doesn’t absorb enough fluids and nutrients because part of the small intestine is missing, or isn’t working right.
Intestinal Failure: This develops when your small intestine does not provide the necessary long term nutrition needed to sustain a normal life.
This is the process of restoring nutritional autonomy in patients with Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) and intestinal failure. The goal: wean from parenteral and enteral (tube feeds) nutrition.
Intestinal and Multivisceral Transplant:
This is the surgical procedure to replace a diseased or shortened small bowel with a healthy bowel from a donor. A multivisceral transplant includes additional organs.
